A tattoo stencil is the thin purple outline a tattoo artist transfers onto the skin before starting to tattoo. It keeps the design in the right place and at the right size. With this free tattoo stencil maker you can turn a sketch, a photo or a digital drawing into a clean outline in a few seconds, then print it or take it to your tattoo artist.
How to make a tattoo stencil
- Upload your image. Click "Choose an image" or drop a file onto the box. The image is processed on your own device and is not uploaded anywhere.
- Pick a style. Line art traces the edges of shapes, which suits portraits, animals, flowers and detailed illustrations. Solid fills the dark areas, which works well for silhouettes, lettering, tribal and blackwork designs.
- Adjust the detail. Move the Detail slider until the important lines appear and the background noise disappears. Smoothing softens grainy photos before tracing, and Clean up specks removes small isolated dots.
- Set the line thickness and colour. Thermal purple is the classic stencil colour; black is easier to trace by hand.
- Download or print. Download a PNG with a transparent background, print the stencil directly, or send it to the Tattoo Try-On tool to see how it looks on your skin.
Tips for a clean stencil
- Start with the sharpest, largest version of the image you have. Blurry or very small images produce broken lines.
- Photos with a plain background work best. Crop the image so the subject fills most of the frame.
- For photos of faces or animals, use a medium Detail value and some Smoothing; too much detail turns skin and fur texture into noise.
- If the lines look too heavy when printed small, reduce the line thickness before printing rather than after.
- Use "Show original" to compare the stencil with your image and make sure no important outline is missing.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use this stencil for a real tattoo?
The tool gives you a starting point. Professional tattoo artists usually redraw and refine a stencil by hand or in their own software and print it on thermal transfer paper. Bring your stencil to your artist as a reference and let them adapt it to your skin and placement.
Are my images uploaded to Artwoonz?
No. All processing happens in your web browser. The image is never sent to our server, and it disappears when you close the page.
Which images can I use?
Use your own drawings and photos, or artwork you have permission to use. If you want a tattoo based on another artist's work, ask the artist first; many tattoo artists and illustrators are happy to create an original design for you.
