Mandalas and sacred geometry are some of the most popular tattoo styles, from small wrist mandalas to full sleeves built from repeating patterns. This mandala drawing tool does the hard part for you: every stroke you draw is repeated around the centre and, if you like, mirrored, so even a few simple lines turn into a perfectly symmetrical design.

How to draw a mandala

  1. Choose the symmetry. 6, 8 and 12 segments give classic mandalas; odd numbers such as 5 or 7 create star and flower shapes.
  2. Start from the centre. Draw a small shape near the middle, such as a circle of dots or a petal. Then work outwards in rings.
  3. Repeat simple shapes. Petals, arcs, triangles, dots and lines look rich once they are repeated. Change the brush size between rings to give the design depth.
  4. Fix mistakes. Use Undo (or Ctrl/Cmd + Z) to remove the last stroke, or the Eraser to remove parts of several strokes at once.
  5. Save your design. Download it as a PNG with a white or transparent background, turn it into a stencil with the Tattoo Stencil Maker, or preview it on your skin with the Tattoo Try-On.

Ideas for mandala and geometric tattoos

  • Dotwork mandala: use a small brush and draw rings of dots of different sizes.
  • Lotus mandala: choose 8 or 12 segments with mirroring on and draw overlapping petal shapes.
  • Sacred geometry: turn mirroring off and use straight lines and circles to build stars, hexagons and interlocking shapes.
  • Half mandala: draw a full mandala and place only half of it on the elbow, knee or shoulder in the try-on tool.
